If any of you have read the disclaimer on my Drink page, you’ll know that I don’t claim to know anything about wine. That being said, we drink a fair bit of the stuff and I’m always eager for wine recommendations that I can easily find (i.e. wines carried in the major supermarkets as we don’t have a Majestic or Oddbins anywhere nearby – and don’t even talk to me about BevMo, the nearest one is approximately 5,000 miles door to door). This doesn’t mean I’m after mass-produced £3 bottles of plonk, there are surprisingly good wines available in the likes of Sainsbury’s, Asda, Lidl and Aldi and those are what this post is all about.

Cookies are the staple of Christmas baking. They come in all shapes and sizes and use innumerable flavor combinations from Christmas spices to peanut butter and jelly.
A Homemade Christmas : Lemon Curd
No matter what season it is, we find some way, some how to make citrus a vital part of that season’s identity. In the summer it’s grapefruit in salads, lemonade, oranges and limes plonked in cocktails and innumerable sorbets and granitas. In the winter it’s dried oranges on the tree, mulled wine flavored with fresh citrus and, my personal favorite, curd.

Yesterday was a glorious sunny winter’s day, perfect for a stroll around the Christmas market in Lille. I was never sure about the English fascination with foreign Christmas markets, it seemed like a hangover from the days when things like wine and cheese were actually cheaper across the Channel. Nonetheless, I rose bright and early yesterday morning, hopped on a bus and a few hours later we were in Lille.
